I recently came across Capstone Educational Consulting, a company in Myanmar with a familiar-sounding name. As their website points out, the company was founded “with the idea of helping students from Myanmar achieve their highest academic aspirations to study at the top universities in the United States.” (It sounds a lot like Capstone’s slogan, Reaching New Heights.)
Since it was founded in 2017 and the company of which I’m managing director was founded in 2009, and since Capstone Education, formerly Capstone Vietnam, co-organized Study North America Higher Education Fairs in Yangon and Mandalay in October 2016, it’s quite possible, even probable that the founders were “inspired” by the Capstone with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Assuming that’s the case, it’s obvious they learned nothing about ethics, creativity, and the importance of originality in their fabled education in the US and the UK. Or it’s the phenomenon of (re)localization.
Like so many Vietnamese and other businesspeople, they probably looked around, saw Capstone Vietnam, and simply copied it, another copycat company and yet another shameful example of Success without integrity is failure. Memo to Aung Tun Lin: You’re the one on the left.
Postscript: A local contact informed that this outfit “is run by a son of a rich family who went to school in the US. They have a small board outside their big mansion.” To all of the “founders” aka partners in crime – a pox on your mansions.
