I can’t help feeling a bit nauseous and angry whenever I see this, the second time in two months this summer. First, it was US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who paid a visit to Hanoi last month, including laying a bouquet of flowers near Trúc Bạch Lake, which John McCain parachuted into on October 26, 1967.
Here’s a C-SPAN video version if you dare. Harris said, He was an extraordinary American. A hero…he loved our country. He was so courageous and really lived the life of a hero…always fought for the best of who we are. Here’s what they always leave out of these reports. Two Vietnamese men living in the area saved his life not once but twice that autumn day. The first time was when they fished an injured McCain out of the lake. The second time was when they protected from a group of angry fellow citizens who wanted to beat the shit out of him or worse. McCain never said “thank you.” If it were not for these two men, McCain’s life would probably have ended that day at the age of 31.
By the way, the monument in front of which Harris and Austin stood is actually a tribute to the Vietnamese who captured McCain. Someone should have translated the inscription for her. (Ouch!) It says: On 26 October 1967 near Trúc Bạch Lake in the capital, Hanoi, the citizens and military caught Pilot John Sidney McCain. The US Navy Air Force Aviator was flying aircraft A4, which crashed near Yen Phu power station. This was one of ten aircraft shot down that same day.
In the name of good bilateral relations, the Vietnamese indulge official US Americans who insist on paying tribute to a man who was bombing their capital and its residents back in the day. A US vice president and secretary of defense paying tribute to a man whose bombing missions killed Vietnamese? It’s beyond perverse.
I guess this site will be a regular on the trip down (war) memory lane tour. John McCain was flying over Hanoi in a A-4E Skyhawk on his 23rd bombing mission. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for the Vietnamese anti-aircraft defense, his jet crossed paths with a missile. Memo to future official US visitors: You might want to skip this particular war monument out of respect to your hosts.

Bombing a light-bulb factory, a civilian target, is a war crime. McCain, obviously, didn’t select the target, he was just following orders, but that doesn’t exonerate him any more than any other soldier who follows an illegal order. According to Amnesty International this particular violation of the Geneva Convention (bombing civilian targets) is actually official U.S. military doctrine:
“Military advantage may involve a variety of considerations, including the security of the attacking force. … Economic targets of the enemy that indirectly but effectively support and sustain the enemy’s war-fighting capability may also be attacked.”
“War is a clash of opposing wills. … While physical factors are crucial in war, the national will and the leadership’s will are also critical components of war. The will to prosecute or the will to resist can be decisive elements. … Strategic attack objectives often include producing effects to demoralize the enemy’s leadership, military forces, and population, thus affecting the adversary’s capability to continue the conflict.”
Both of these statements, taken from different U.S. military manuals and documents, represent direct violations of the Geneva Convention (and, it should be noted, well before the advent of George W. Bush).
But McCain didn’t just carry out such illegal orders himself, he willingly voiced support for them, specifically during the 1999 war against Yugoslavia when “water systems, power and heating plants, hospitals, universities, schools, apartment complexes, senior citizens’ homes, bridges, factories, trains, buses, radio and TV stations, the telephone system, oil refineries, embassies, marketplaces and more were deliberately destroyed by U.S./NATO planes in a ruthless 10-week bombing campaign.”
For reference, here is Article 54 of the Geneva convention:
“It is prohibited to attack, destroy, remove, or render useless objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, such as foodstuffs, crops, livestock, drinking water installations and supplies, and irrigation works, for the specific purpose of denying them for their sustenance value to the civilian population or to the adverse Party, whatever the motive, whether in order to starve out civilians, to cause them to move away, or for any other motive.”

Phó Tổng thống và Bộ trưởng Quốc phòng Mỹ đến Việt Nam để tỏ lòng tưởng nhớ người đã ném bom giết chết người Việt Nam? Điều đó vượt quá sự hư hỏng!
Tôi đoán rằng địa điểm này (bức phù điêu bên hồ Trúc Bạch – người dịch) sẽ là một địa chỉ thường xuyên trong các chuyến đi hồi tưởng (về chiến tranh). It’s not just Vietnam. McCain was a war hawk through and through. He immediately supported every war, be it Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria or Libya.
And McCain backed wars that haven’t yet taken place. These included North Korea, Nigeria and perhaps Iran.
The late Republican senator was recorded singing “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”. McCain later claimed he was joking, although he was a fierce critic of Iran and the prospect of US military involvement in the Islamic republic is real.
Despite 9/11 having no connection to Iraq, McCain described the US move to invade the country in response as a battle “between right and wrong, good and evil”. He later apparently admitted during his 2008 presidential run that the US invaded Iraq for oil.
With such invasions and warmongering in mind, Pilger questioned the Guardian’s characterisation of McCain as a “hero”.

Iran was a longtime target of McCain’s threats, with the senator infamously channeling his inner Beach Boys on the presidential campaign trail in 2007. McCain’s animus toward Iranians, a nation whose people are among the most America-loving in the world, bordered on pathological. Upon learning that $158 million worth of American cigarettes were exported to Iran in violation of US sanctions he quipped, “maybe that’s a way of killing them.”
Oh, McCain was a joker, all right. Here’s one of his greatest hits: during his initial run for Senate back in 1986, McCain asked a Washington, DC audience if they’d heard “the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?” Ready for the knee-slapping punchline? “When she finally regained consciousness and tries to speak,” McCain continued, “her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, Where is that marvelous ape?’”
McCain’s periodic misogyny spared no one. During a 1992 campaign stop, his wife Cindy playfully noted that the then-56-year-old was losing his hair. “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt,” he lovingly retorted. It was more than just shocking words — when it came to issues of reproductive rights, equal pay, workplace discrimination and sexual harassment, McCain repeatedly demonstrated a disdain for women that’s been forgotten in all the lofty eulogizing.
No to MLK Day, Veterans and 9/11 First Responders
His relationship with black people was just as fraught with controversy. McCain vehemently opposed the national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, a popular move in a state known for its racism but a shock to millions of Americans who watched McCain vote against the holiday even after President Ronald Reagan finally approved it. He also supported flying the Confederate flag at the South Carolina capitol and, more importantly, consistently pushed policies and actions that fueled racial economic disparities and the disproportionate mass incarceration of people of color.
What’s arguably most confounding about the recent media fawning over McCain is the myth-making surrounding his record on veterans’ issues. Lost amid all the gushing over McCain’s patriotic service is the fact that he voted dozens of times against funding for veterans’ health care and other crucial services, claiming they were “too expensive.” Yet McCain had no problem waging and expanding the never-ending “War on Terror” that has cost more than a million lives and more than $5 trillion taxpayer dollars. McCain’s reluctance to spend public funds to care for the men and women who put their lives on the line while fighting to advance the government’s agenda is indeed curious given it was the public who financed his own education at the United States Naval Academy.

Great overview. Thanks for sharing. McCain should have had a sticker that said I HEART WAR. In addition to all of the above, he also had an anger management problem. A friend of mine who’s a veteran recalls getting into a heated discussion with him in his DC office that almost led to a fistfight.
By the way, there’s a reference to the “McCain Memorial” in that VNExpress Int’l article. That’s bullshit and should be removed. Keep in mind that this is a Vietnamese publication. Shameful.
