I chose a hopeful image because I and millions of others hope, pray, and look forward to day when the Israeli-sponsored genocide ends and the recovery begins.
This is the gist of a conversation I had with Rob Wolters, a Dutch friend whose describes himself on his LinkedIn profile as an Inspirator | For a Nature-Inclusive, Healthy & Humane Society. Rob’s efforts to support people in Gaza have been nothing short of herculean. Rob is a good man, a gifted writer, and an outside-the-box thinker.
Below is a transcription of our online chat with minor edits and Rob’s permission. I’m not a futurist but I do like to think about alternative scenarios and probable to different geopolitical situations. There is no issue more important in 2026 than the ongoing Israeli-sponsored genocide in Gaza.
Here’s an AI-generated summary of our conversation:
MAA and RW discuss two possible futures for Gaza.
The first—and grimmer—scenario is that Israel continues intensifying Palestinian suffering until most of Gaza’s population is compelled to flee into Egypt. International aid would probably arrive only after the displacement had occurred and Israel had achieved its objectives. By then, Gaza as a Palestinian homeland might already have been lost.
The more hopeful “Plan B” depends on political change following the Israeli elections and the U.S. midterms. Growing US opposition to the prolonged war with Iran and its mounting financial costs could weaken Israel’s access to U.S. support and political protection. Europe might then feel able—or compelled—to act independently.
Under this scenario, Israel would gradually lose control of Gaza and its impunity. Those responsible for war crimes could face justice, an international force could assume responsibility for security, and reconstruction could begin under UN authority. Palestinians would return in phases as Gaza’s infrastructure, land, and economy recovered.
Both agree that this alternative cannot come soon enough. RW adds that governments that previously submitted to Israeli pressure may turn against it once they sense its power weakening, partly out of accumulated frustration and humiliation.
Following our chat is an Arabic translation of the same.
MAA
MAA: I keep wondering when someone or something is going to intervene in Gaza and stop Israel dead in its tracks. I fantasize about a multinational peacekeeping force that arrives via air and sea to protect the people and provide them with lifesaving supplies, including food, water, and medicine. Israel is playing the long game and will continue with its acts of cruelty, sadism, and spite until the “job is finished.” What’s the end game?
RW: That would make sense if we would live in a world that makes sense. My theory: IsraHell increases the mental and physical pressure on people in Gaza to the extreme and at the boiling point opens the crossings. In that way they ensure that over 80% of the population will leave, out of pure despair and lack of opportunities to make a living. So, the next hell those who leave will encounter are the refugees camps, probably in Egypt.
MAA: Maybe, but haven’t we already reached the extreme the boiling point? Knowing how hateful and spiteful Israel is and how it’s been able to act with impunity, it will stay this bloody course indefinitely. If there is a mass exodus to Egypt, the int’l community would probably provide assistance because it would be safe to do so. By then, it will be too late and Gaza will be lost.
RW: Yes, from a humanitarian point of view, the boiling point was reached long ago. But Israel acts and thinks from a fundamentally different moral position than you and I do. It appears willing to accept — or deliberately cause — levels of Palestinian suffering that we find unimaginable.
If the exodus takes place, the international community will have to respond. Reluctantly and far too slowly, it will probably begin providing help — but only once Israel has achieved its objectives and humanitarian assistance no longer conflicts with its immediate interests. The most extreme Zionists may still oppose such help because they would prefer to see every Palestinian expelled or dead. By then, however, Gaza as Palestinians have known it may already have been lost.
But there is another possible scenario, connected to the Israeli elections and the US midterms. Concern and anger are growing in the United States over Israel having pressured the US to start an endless war with Iran — something senior Israeli officials have openly acknowledged. The war has already continued for months, and its financial costs are becoming unacceptable even to a growing number of extremists within Trump’s administration.
This could weaken Israel’s access to American money and, above all, America’s political shield. Europe would then lose its principal excuse for refusing to act. Europe is not trapped between the United States and Israel; it has chosen political cowardice and subordination over independent action.
That could set a counter-process in motion: Israel gradually loses its grip on Gaza; its impunity is lifted and those responsible for war crimes within the government and the IDF are brought to justice; the international community assumes control, including military responsibility for security; and reconstruction begins under the UN flag. Palestinians could then return in phases, in accordance with the recovering capacity of the land, essential infrastructure and Gaza’s economy to sustain them.
Gaza could once again become a place for its Palestinian people, rather than territory controlled and reshaped according to Israel’s interests.
MAA: Yes, I was thinking about the impact of the elections in both countries. Plan B can’t happen fast enough.
RW: True — and, to make plan B more probable, we should not forget that a great deal of frustration has also been accumulating among the cowards. They were too weak to act and repeatedly bowed to Israel, but that humiliation will come at a price. Cowards often turn on the powerful the moment they sense that power slipping away.
