The Difference Between Street Art & Graffiti

Knowing that a picture is worth a thousand words, here are some pics I took in Hanoi that graphically illustrate the difference between street art and graffiti. The fact that I include one of the latter and four of the former give you an idea of which I prefer. Street art puts a smile on my face while graffiti raises my blood pressure. (All photos by MAA)

Let’s get the ugly one out of the way so we can focus on the beautiful. How much talent does it take to “create” this, I ask myself rhetorically?
Now that’s better, isn’t it?
From the same set of murals.
Last but not least.

Stay tuned for an article about this issue in Vietnam in which I examine the problem and propose some solutions. I wish every “graffiti artist” could read it but they’re probably too busy buying more spray paint and making their communities ugly.

Bonus: I call this work “Crazy Cat.” I see it every day on my way to work.
