“Vietnam’s Economic Hopes Fade as COVID-19 Takes Away Business”

This 4 October Voice of America article is a textbook example of propaganda and spin, which worse than usual under the liar-in-chief and his cabal. The title is clickbait for those grinding a pro-USA and anti-Viet Nam ax. (Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany, would be proud.)

Hmm, let’s see, which country is doing better in this regard, the US or Viet Nam? The latter is one of the international role models in how it has handled and effectively contained COVID-19. The former is an object of pity and ridicule. (I discuss some of the differences between the two in this September 2020 essay.)

As of this writing, it has 57 active cases, all imported, out of a total of 1,126 confirmed cases since 23 January 2020. The US, you know, VOA’s master, had 71,687 new cases and 928 more deaths on Friday. Total number of confirmed cases and deaths, as of today: 8,342,665 and 224,282. “We’re #1!” in a most unenviable category.

I should add that Viet Nam’s economy is projected to grow at up to 3% this year, depending upon the source, the highest in Asia, and 8% or higher in 2021, again depending upon the source. Which country has more “hope” right now? Who’s your Daddy, VOA?

Let’s call a spade a spade. These kinds are articles are a lame attempt to influence young Vietnamese who are learning English. Maybe they’ll even believe what they’re reading, buy into the rapidly fading US cultural mythology (“the greatest nation on earth,” indeed), and and turn against their own country, the truth be damned. Let’s stick with the facts and reject the USA’s alternate reality.

My favorite part of the article was this 8.10.20 comment by “An Thi Thanh Hoa”: I’m proud of my country, Viet Nam! I’m an expat and I am, too!
