Imagine that!

I feel compelled to share this Facebook post by Einat Temkin, a woman of great courage and tenacity. She needs no introduction because she provides a brief one in the first paragraph. Einat, I know you don’t need to hear this but thank you for speaking truth to power, ignorance, and arrogance. Thank you for your passionate and unswerving commitment to justice and peace. God, knows the world needs more people like you.

Below is an Arabic translation. Why? Because I want my Palestinian friends and colleagues, and other Arabic speakers, to know that people like Einat exist, anti-Zionist Israeli Jews who are speaking out against the genocide and the country, their country, that is perpetrating it.

Yes, I am Israeli-born. Yes, I am a real person. I don’t live there now, but I did for 20 years. Yes, I served in IDF (1 year 9 months) like everyone else does. Yes, I speak Hebrew, English and Spanish fluently. Yes, I actually use my own head, heart, and integrity to decide what is correct, just, and humane.

My whole life I’ve had a problem with authority and it’s finally paying off. I will not drink the Kool-Aid simply because everyone else is. In fact, that is probably why I refuse to drink the Kool-Aid – because everyone else does.

We are in a state of total crisis. The level of violence, genocide, lawless, murderous annihilation of Palestinians by Israel is barbaric and inconceivable.

All the posts I see from Israel indicate that the entire thing is collapsing in on itself.

“The center cannot hold”, as Yeats put it so eloquently in 1919.

Now is the time to take a stand. No wishy-washy idealistic nonsense about dialogue and coexistence, no middle ground, no happy compromises – we either do what is right or we don’t.

Any suggested solution presented with full insistence on the viability – not to mention the “justice” – of a two-state solution, Israel the Jewish State, alongside a Palestinian “state”, whether you call it “Two States, One Homeland” or “One Land for All” (but still separate territories) or a “Bi-National Federation” etc. etc. is a doomed proposition.

If we end up with two distinct states or territories we are back to checkpoints and borders. Borders decided by whom? Who will man the checkpoints and the borders? Will the Palestinian state/territory be allowed to have a military to man their own checkpoints and borders? The oldest question of all, which has never been solved: how do you connect the West Bank, which has now been overrun by lawless murderous settlers, to the absolutely demolished and devastated Gaza Strip as one state or a territory or whatever? Who would decide where the borders lie, and who will define the authority, power and the rights awarded to the residents of each of these fictional lovely co-existing territories? Who would control the flow of water from natural bodies of water into said territories? Who would control the airspace and communications and everything that makes a sovereign democracy a sovereign democracy?

Sorry all. We cannot have our cake and eat it too. Final answer.

We are either all one country with equal rights for every single resident between the river and the sea, without borders, without checkpoints, with full right of return for the Palestinian refugees – as per internationally mandated laws – for everyone who was displaced, even if that means thousands and thousands of bourgeois Israelis have to give up their lovely homes, because – DUH – those homes were never theirs at all, without supremacy of one ethnicity or religion over another, with a constitution, with rule of law, with complete separation of religion and state, with no guaranteed majority of anyone based on any criteria whatsoever – or we have nothing.

Sure, simply continue the way that we’ve been going and we will reach mutually assured destruction within 5 or 10 or 50 years – max.

And yes – gasp – there is no reason at all that the one-state should not be called Palestine.

It’s merely insidious, nonstop indoctrination and mythology which makes Jews recoil at that thought. That was the historic name of the land for hundreds of years. It’s a name. Stop being afraid of bedtime stories.

One state for all who live in that wretched place is the only solution. I’ll die on this hill.

من النهر إلى البحر

نعم، أنا مولود في إسرائيل. نعم، أنا شخص حقيقي. لا أعيش هناك الآن، لكنني عشت فيها لمدة 20 عامًا. نعم، خدمت في الجيش الإسرائيلي (سنة وتسعة أشهر) كما يفعل الجميع. نعم، أتحدث العبرية والإنجليزية والإسبانية بطلاقة. نعم، أستخدم عقلي وقلبي ونزاهتي لاتخاذ ما هو صحيح وعادل وإنساني.

طوال حياتي كانت لدي مشكلة مع السلطة، ويبدو أن ذلك يؤتي ثماره أخيرًا. لن “أشرب الكول-إيد” لمجرد أن الجميع يفعل ذلك. في الواقع، هذا على الأرجح هو السبب في أنني أرفض فعل ذلك — لأن الجميع يفعلونه.

أي حل يُطرح مع الإصرار الكامل على إمكانية — ناهيك عن “عدالة” — حل الدولتين، أي إسرائيل كدولة يهودية إلى جانب “دولة” فلسطينية، سواء سُمّي “دولتان، وطن واحد” أو “أرض واحدة للجميع” (ولكن بأراضٍ منفصلة) أو “اتحاد ثنائي القومية” وما إلى ذلك… هو طرح محكوم عليه بالفشل.

إذا انتهى بنا الأمر بدولتين أو كيانين منفصلين، فسوف نعود إلى الحواجز والحدود. من سيقرر الحدود؟ من سيدير الحواجز والحدود؟ هل سيسمح للدولة/الكيان الفلسطيني بامتلاك جيش لإدارة حواجزه وحدوده؟ السؤال الأقدم الذي لم يُحل أبدًا: كيف سيتم ربط الضفة الغربية — التي اجتاحها الآن مستوطنون خارجون عن القانون — بقطاع غزة المدمر بالكامل، كدولة واحدة أو كيان واحد أو أيًا كان؟ من سيقرر أين تقع الحدود، ومن سيحدد السلطة والقوة والحقوق الممنوحة لسكان هذه الكيانات المتخيلة المتعايشة؟ من سيسيطر على تدفق المياه من المصادر الطبيعية؟ من سيسيطر على المجال الجوي والاتصالات وكل ما يجعل الديمقراطية ذات السيادة ديمقراطية ذات سيادة؟

آسف للجميع. لا يمكننا أن نجمع بين الأمرين. هذه هي الإجابة النهائية.

إما أن نكون جميعًا دولة واحدة بحقوق متساوية لكل مقيم بين النهر والبحر، بلا حدود، بلا حواجز، مع حق العودة الكامل للاجئين الفلسطينيين — وفقًا للقوانين الدولية — لكل من تم تهجيره، حتى لو كان ذلك يعني أن آلاف وآلاف الإسرائيليين من الطبقة الميسورة سيتعين عليهم التخلي عن منازلهم الجميلة، لأن — ببساطة — تلك المنازل لم تكن لهم أصلًا، دون تفوق عرقي أو ديني لأي طرف، مع دستور، وسيادة القانون، وفصل كامل بين الدين والدولة، ومن دون ضمان أغلبية لأي طرف بناءً على أي معيار — أو لا شيء.
