Defacing Public and Private Property as a Form of “Personal Expression”
These two photos, which I took on a recent trip to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), are examples of graffiti/tagging and street art. In the first example, young people run around at night, spray paint cans in hand, “expressing themselves” wherever they find a blank surface. In the second, they usually ask permission. Some works are even commissioned. How do they make you feel? The difference is obvious: the former is ugly and illegal and the latter is often beautiful, legal, and requires talent.
Here are two articles that I published last year in English and Vietnamese. The issue of visual pollution is one I feel strongly about, in addition to other forms of pollution. Then, as now, I wish the government would crack down on this vandalism.

Vandalism is most seen in municipalities like Hanoi and Saigon.
I know and it’s appalling. Still waiting for the govt to do sth about it. Other countries have been successful in dealing with this problem. The solutions are there. Just do it!
