This is already happening for traffic violations: Under Decree 176/2024, Vietnamese citizens can now earn up to 5 million VND ($200) for reporting traffic violations, marking a significant step towards improved road safety. Whoever drafted this decree knows the Vietnamese mindset all too well. Most people will not “snitch” on their fellow citizens for free but a financial incentive is a game changer.

I see these violations every day and would be delighted to report them by location using an app. I’d donate any “reward money” to a nonprofit focusing on environmental protection. It’s a triple win for the environment, the state, and a charity.
