Revisited: Genocide in Gaza/الإبادة الجماعية في غزة/רצח עם בעזה

Elchanan Poupko is a self-described New England-based eleventh-generation rabbi, teacher, and author. Poupko has nearly 29,000 followers on LinkedIn. Below is a recent LinkedIn post followed by some comments. These screenshots are from a 27.10.24 LinkedIn post I knew about because one of my connections commented.

Sadly, Poupko plays the blame-the-victim game like many US Americans, including some friends and acquaintances who are well-intentioned yet misguided individuals. In the US, they often refer to themselves as “liberals,” a word I dislike because the meaning is the mind of the beholder. More specifically, they tend to be selectively open-minded, tolerant, and empathetic. They believe the Israeli invasion and occupation of Gaza is a war against Hamas and that the main goal is to bring home the hostages when in fact what’s occurring there is a textbook case of genocide, including ethnic cleansing.

I dispense with this lame and immoral argument and address other key issues in a 4.11.24 CounterPunch article I Had a Dream: From Vietnam to Gaza. I welcome your comments.

A rabbi who supports genocide. Imagine that. It contradicts everything I know about Judaism. Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss spells it out in this 3.5-minute video Existence of Zionist Israel is antithetical to Judaism uploaded to YouTube in November 2023.

Peace, MAA

MAA: Gotta love the cup of espresso against the backdrop of a devastated part of Gaza. Nice touch for someone utterly devoid of empathy and compassion.

I don’t watch the news. It’s too painful.

    I don’t follow politics. It’s too depressing.

I don’t make huge sacrifices. It’s too late to save the world, anyway.

    🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼

I’ll just do what I can to have the best impact I can at work, whilst looking after the planet and keeping my family safe.

And if that’s you, I totally get it. I go there intermittently, too.

    I support you.

As long as you’re honest about the piles of privilege you’re soaking up. As long as you’re absolutely clear that you’re one of the few people who doesn’t have to care, because whatever way it goes, you’ll still be alright.

I know that many of us, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, are done with a system that has proven time and time again that it doesn’t give a shit about us

and the anger and disillusionment that comes of being disadvantaged can get right in the way of us seeing the privilege we are exerting every single day.

If you are choosing to look away, you’re better off that way.

I’ve just seen a man with half a head. A child with half a body. A protestor being dragged along the floor by police. People chanting “Let the IDF win, and f*** the Arabs!”

And seconds later I’ve seen a very rich, powerful white man crying victim.

I’ve seen Western leaders promising unconditional support for Israel.

So yeah, it’s no fun out here at all.

So it’s a good idea to close the laptop and go play monopoly with the kids.

But stop thinking that all the privileged people live on Park Lane.

They live right there in your living room.

  2. “Our governments lie nonstop. The Israeli government lies from morning till night. We’re exactly in the world of George Orwell’s 1984. The Israelis lie, the State Department lies, the White House lies, but the court of Public Opinion and the International Court of Justice is not going to accept that. Israel is on the path of being found to be committing genocide. The devastating record that they are creating is going to haunt them for generations to come.” -Jeffrey Sachs

  3. To the Zionists who are offended by this post: You are sad and pathetic people, lost souls. Your answer to the question I pose in this post based on a quote by Han Kang tells me everything I need to know about you: https://markashwill.com/2024/11/17/are-you-truly-human/. You have the blood of innocents on your hands because of what you say and do. You stand on the wrong side of history and will be judged accordingly.
