Drumming Up Business or Spitting in the Wind?

This is a common sight at restaurants in Vietnam, especially outside of the city, which I’ve always found amusing. The guy in corporate orange is trying to wave people over to eat at his employer’s phở restaurant. This sales tactic must be successful – never. 😀 Ladies selling guava on the side of the road do the same thing. They get my attention but it’s never motivated me to pull over and buy any fruit.

If I had time, I would hang out for a couple of hours to measure his success rate as part of my ongoing ethnographic research in Vietnam. A short conversation with the gentleman in orange would also provide valuable “data.” Maybe grist for a future post.

Some restaurants and other businesses have “gotten with the program” and purchased inflatable air-powered dancer tube men and women, the ideal “employees”: no salary, benefits, breaks, meals, team-building activities, or staff retreats, just the negligible cost of electricity to keep them moving. I have yet to patronize a business because of their insistent waving.

Another example of throwing something against the wall and seeing what sticks?
