Dear American Christian,

With the explosion of anti-Muslim rhetoric yet again online, I just want to express something to you.

I’ve been in Christian ministry all my life.

I’ve spent the majority of my life in my home state of Idaho.

I’ve been writing publicly now for many years.

I’ve never had a Muslim try to convert me.

I’ve never had a Muslim say I deserve to burn in hell for all eternity.

I’ve never had a Muslim say I should be publicly executed for my beliefs.

I’ve never had a Muslim threaten me and my family online.

I’ve never seen armed Muslim militia groups take up residence in my state.

I’ve never had Muslims try to legislate their scriptures to be read in all public schools in my state.

I’ve never watched as Muslims stormed our nation’s capitol, holding up their scriptures and religious symbols and pray to God after breaking in.

I have witnessed Christians do all these things.

If you’re concerned about possible extremists in a religious group who want to impose an authoritarian interpretation of their religion on others, maybe it’s time to start looking in your own religious group first.

To my Muslim brothers and sisters, I’m sorry for all the vile hatred and bigotry that has been directed towards you and your faith lately, especially from those claiming to be Christians. It’s wrong and you don’t deserve that.

عزيزي المسيحي الأمريكي،

مع تصاعد الخطاب المعادي للمسلمين مرة أخرى على الإنترنت، أود أن أعبّر لك عن أمرٍ ما.

لقد كنتُ في الخدمة الكنسية طوال حياتي.
وقضيت معظم حياتي في ولايتي الأم، أيداهو.
وكنت أكتب علنًا منذ سنوات عديدة.

لم يحدث يومًا أن حاول مسلم أن يُقنعني بتغيير ديني.
ولم يقل لي مسلم قط إنني أستحق أن أحترق في الجحيم إلى الأبد.
ولم يقل لي مسلم إن عليَّ أن أُعدم علنًا بسبب معتقداتي.
ولم يهددني مسلم أنا أو عائلتي عبر الإنترنت.
ولم أرَ جماعات ميليشيا مسلّحة مسلمة تتخذ من ولايتي مقرًا لها.
ولم يحاول المسلمون أن يفرضوا قراءة كتبهم المقدسة في جميع المدارس الحكومية في ولايتي.
ولم أشاهد المسلمين يقتحمون مبنى الكابيتول الأمريكي، رافعين كتبهم المقدسة ورموزهم الدينية، ويصلّون بعد اقتحامه.

لقد شاهدتُ المسيحيين يفعلون كل هذه الأمور.

إذا كنت قلقًا من وجود متطرفين محتملين في جماعة دينية يريدون فرض تفسير استبدادي لدينهم على الآخرين، فربما حان الوقت لتبدأ بالنظر داخل جماعتك الدينية أولًا.

ولإخوتي وأخواتي المسلمين، أعتذر عن كل الكراهية والتمييز البغيض الذي وُجّه إليكم وإلى دينكم في الآونة الأخيرة، خاصة من أولئك الذين يدّعون أنهم مسيحيون. هذا خطأ، وأنتم لا تستحقون ذلك أبدًا.
