This is a LinkedIn post by Ms. We’am Hamdan, who is a Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge. At the bottom are links to two versions of a song based on this post.
Our longing is not weakness. It is the echo of a hunger that no screen can quiet, no image can explain.
We long with voices cracking, with joy that limps beside grief, with memories too full to carry, and dreams too far to chase.
We long for the better, not for palaces, but for tables full of food without needing to beg through glass.
We long for the ordinary. The dull moments, the bitter coffee, the silence of peace.
We long for humanity. For morals lost, For souls stolen, For dignity unburied.
We long for the boy betrayed by blood, left in a well with nothing but dreams, still waiting to be seen, still waiting to be believed.
We long not for memory, but for the sound of laughter that doesn’t carry the weight of survival.
We whisper our Ḥanīn into a world that forgot how to hear. And so we fall silent not because we have no words, but because this world is mute.

“You’ve got to be internationalists. That’s one reason why you rightly talk about the barbaric genocide in Gaza. Right now, that’s got to be a major focus because we are internationalists, and Palestinian people are undergoing a level of criminality and attacks [on] their humanity with genocide and ethnic cleansing that requires our voices, requires our bodies, requires our time and our energy. These are the times that test people’s character, and you find out who people really are.” I’ve found out who many people are, and it’s both sad and infuriating. https://www.realchangenews.org/news/2025/09/10/there-no-genuine-hope-s-not-wrestling-despair-dr-cornel-west-fascism-spirituality-and
