An International Educator in Vietnam

I am Managing Director and Founder of Capstone Vietnam, a human resource development company that offers a variety of education and training solutions for individual and institutional clients.  Capstone has offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. 

From 2005 to 2009, I served as country director of the Institute of International Education in Vietnam.  Prior to moving to Vietnam, I was director of the World Languages Institute, adjunct lecturer and Fulbright program adviser at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY/Buffalo).

During 1994/95, I took a leave of absence to work as a primary researcher on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) Case Study Project in Germany, Japan and the U.S.  I was a Research Associate at the University of Michigan’s Center for Human Growth and Development (CHGD) and a visiting scholar at the University of Frankfurt and Northwestern University.  Among other work, I edited and contributed to The Educational System in Germany: Case Study Findings and co-authored the chapter on “The Development and Implementation of Education Standards in the United States” that appeared in The Educational System in the United States:  Case Study Findings.

In 2003, I became the first U.S. American to be awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialists Grant to Vietnam.  In addition to serving as country director of IIE-Vietnam, I was executive director of the U.S.-Indochina Educational Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization I founded in 2000, am an adviser to VietAbroader, a Vietnamese student organization with over 60,000 members in Vietnam, the U.S. and elsewhere, a member of the Advisory Board of Teachers for Vietnam, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, an AIESEC Vietnam Learning Partner,  an adviser to TEDxMekong, and a contributing editor to Global Viet Diaspora, a blog that ”hopes to facilitate and promote the study of the (‘colonial’ and ‘victim’) diasporas in Vietnamese history, as well as overseas Vietnamese diasporas around the globe.”  I am also a co-editor of  The Journal of Global Viet Diaspora (University of Houston) and a blogger for The Huffington Post. 

I’ve written widely on issues related to Vietnam, U.S.-Vietnam relations, Vietnamese studying overseas, accreditation, international student access and equity, the use of education as a tool of soft power and the development of intercultural competence.   My most recent book, Vietnam Today: A Guide to a Nation at a Crossroads (with Thai Ngoc Diep), was published in 2005 by Intercultural Press.  I recently co-authored a book chapter entitled “Developing Globally Competent Citizens:  The Contrasting Cases of the United States and Vietnam,” (with Hoang Thi Duong Oanh) that appeared in The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence (ed. Darla Deardorff).  I’m an external reviewer for the Comparative Education Review, published by The University of Chicago Press.

I earned a Ph.D. in Comparative and Higher Education from the SUNY/Buffalo Department of Educational Leadership and Policy and hold M.A. and B.A. degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Delaware, respectively.

Tôi là nhà sáng lập và Giám đốc điều hành của Công ty TNHH Capstone Việt Nam, một công ty phát triển nguồn nhân lực tại Hà Nội, chuyên cung cấp các giải pháp giáo dục và đào tạo cho cá nhân và các tổ chức.

Từ năm 2005 đến năm 2009, tôi làm Giám đốc của Viện Giáo dục Quốc tế (IIE) tại Việt Nam. Trước khi đến Việt Nam, tôi đã từng làm Giám đốc của Viện Ngôn ngữ Thế giới, giảng viên thỉnh giảng và cố vấn chương trình Fulbright ở Đại học Bang New York tại Buffalo (SUNY/Buffalo).

Trong những năm 1994 – 1995, tôi nghỉ phép và làm việc trong một công trình nghiên cứu sơ bộ về Dự án nghiên cứu Toán và Khoa học Quốc tế lần thứ 3 (Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) Case Study Project) tại Đức, Nhật Bản và Mỹ. Tôi từng là Chuyên viên nghiên cứu tại Trung tâm Phát triển Con người trực thuộc Đại học Michigan và là học giả thỉnh giảng ở trường Đại học Frankfurt và Đại học Northwestern.

Năm 2003, tôi trở thành người Mỹ đầu tiên được nhận giải thưởng Chuyên gia cao cấp của Chương trình Fulbright tại Việt Nam. Ngoài việc làm Giám đốc của IIE-Việt Nam, tôi cũng là Giám đốc điều hành của một tổ chức phi lợi nhuận, gọi là Quỹ Giáo dục Đông Dương – Hoa Kỳ mà tôi thành lập năm 2000. Hiện nay, tôi là cố vấn của VietAbroader, một tổ chức sinh viên Việt Nam với 60.000 thành viên ở Việt Nam, Hoa Kỳ và các nơi khác. Tôi còn làm việc trong Ban cố vấn của Teachers for Vietnam, một tổ chức phi lợi nhuận tại Hoa Kỳ, và là biên tập viên cộng tác cho Global Viet Diaspora, một blog “mong muốn thúc đẩy và tăng cường việc học tập của những người di cư (cả “thực dân” và “nạn nhân”) trong lịch sử Việt Nam, cũng như những người Việt di cư trên toàn cầu.”

Tôi có nhiều bài viết về các vấn đề liên quan tới Việt Nam, mối quan hệ Việt – Mỹ, du học sinh Việt Nam, kiểm định, quyền lợi và cơ hội của sinh viên quốc tế, việc sử dụng giáo dục làm công cụ tạo sức mạnh mềm và sự phát triển khả năng giao thoa văn hóa. Quyển sách gần đây nhất của tôi, Vietnam Today: A Guide to a Nation at a Crossroads (hợp tác với Thái Ngọc Diệp), được xuất bản năm 2005 bởi Nhà xuất bản Giao thoa văn hóa (International Press). Gần đây, tôi cũng là đồng tác giả của một chương sách có tựa đề “Phát triển sinh viên có khả năng toàn cầu: Những trường hợp đối lập giữa Việt Nam và Hoa Kỳ, (viết cùng Hoàng Thị Dương Oanh) được in trong The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence (một cuốn cẩm nang về khả năng giao thoa văn hóa được biên tập bởi Darla Deardoff). Tôi cũng là người đánh giá ngoài cho ấn phẩm Comparative Education Review của nhà xuất bản Đại học Chicago.

Tôi có bằng Tiến sĩ trong ngành Giáo dục bậc cao và Giáo dục so sánh của Khoa Lãnh đạo và Chính sách Giáo dục, thuộc Đại học bang New York tại Buffalo.
