Palestinians, who have been oppressed by Israel for decades, are “beasts, they are not human,” “wild beasts,” and Palestinian children are “little snakes.” Send them back to the Middle Ages,” cries Eli Yishai. “Erase all of Gaza from the face of the earth,” screams Galit Distel Atbaryan. “I am happy to be a fascist!”, exclaims Miri Regev without a hint of irony as a representative of a settler-colonial state in which “Never Again” does not apply to Palestinians. And the icing on the bloodstained cake: “The army must find ways more painful than death for the civilians in Gaza. Killing them is not enough,” says Amihai Ben-Eliyahu, not to be outdone by his previous statements and those of his fellow high-level Zionists. (It’s worth noting that Ben-Eliyahu is a rabbi, defined as a spiritual leader or religious teacher in Judaism.)
No dog whistles, no equivocation. These bold, open, and bloodthirsty displays of hatred and arrogance reflect their perceived impunity and sense of superiority. These hardcore Zionists and settler colonialists, in rabid pursuit of the Greater Israel project, hang themselves with their words time and again. The fish rots from the head.
In a LinkedIn post, Ismail Aderonmu, in response to a video of Israelis waving Israeli flags and blocking aid trucks, asked: What kind of society applauds the slow, televised starvation of children? Israeli institutions have normalized this cruelty. But what’s worse is the public celebration—the smiling soldiers, the genocidal chants, the pride in making babies starve. My God. My response: (One afflicted by) a mass psychosis that’s the result of generations of indoctrination and the wholehearted embrace of tribalism.
