International Student Recruitment: 2+2 Equals Success

09/03/2013

For those with an interest in international student recruitment and the 2+2 formula that has become so popular in recent years (2 years at a US community college + 2 years at a four-year college or university equals a bachelor’s degree), you might want to follow this blog and participate in the on- and offline discussion.  It’s related to a general session entitled International Student Recruitment: 2+2 Equals Success (session abstract below) that will be offered at the 2013 annual conference of NAFSA:  Association of International Educators in late May in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.  Join me and my distinguished colleagues and co-presenters:  Judy Irwin, Connect Globally, (chair), Maria Hesse, Arizona State University, and Ross Jennings, Green River Community College (WA).

2+2

Because the goal of most international students enrolled at U.S. community colleges is a bachelor’s degree, it has become imperative that two-year and four-year institutions engage in joint recruiting and marketing activities. This session focuses on the advantages and benefits, from institutional, student, and field perspectives, to promoting such a package.

Note:  The above image is one that my company uses to promote the 2+2 concept in Vietnam.  2 years at a community college + 2 years at a university (or four-year college) = a diploma.

Study in the USA to Publish Vietnamese Language Magazine

12/02/2013

Study in the USA logoStudy in the USA ® has announced that it will publish the first-ever Vietnamese language magazine for distribution in the coming year to students and parents in Vietnam. This special pocket-size edition will feature content especially appealing to Vietnamese students, including information and articles about four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, high school completion programs, the popular 2+2 option, visa issues, intensive English programs and the US education system. It will be distributed free of charge to attendees of IIE US Higher Education Fairs, StudyUSA Higher Education Fairs and Community College Fairs in Vietnam in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014.

This will be the sixth foreign language magazine published by Study in the USA, after Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic. Given that parents are the key decision-makers and that very few have a reading knowledge of English, it’s essential this information be made available in the local language.

Study in the USA was founded in 1978 by Peggy Printz as a response to Asian friends asking how their children should choose and apply to universities in North America. It was the first publication promoting U.S. programs to international students and continues to be the leader in its field. Today, Study in the USA operates with the mission of providing helpful information about U.S. higher education to international students and to connect them with reputable programs. Ten regional magazines, including a boarding schools & summer studies issue, are published by Study in the USA each year for students and their parents. More than 300,000 copies are distributed annually in 123 countries.

StudyUSA.com, which is an award-winning website, contains profiles of hundreds of quality American programs in fourteen languages. It features in-depth articles and current news stories about international students and the US educational system, including university admissions, scholarships and testing. It also provides online advisors who will answer admissions questions and offer personal assistance with unique situations. A company of principles, Study in the USA only accepts listings from schools, universities, institutions and programs that meet the highest standards of integrity and excellence in education and service to international students. With these practices, Study in the USA has helped millions of students find US programs.

A note to my US higher ed colleagues:  For information about advertising opportunities and a chance to contribute to this new magazine, contact Travis Drageset, Marketing & Social Media, Study in the USA at (206) 622-2075 or marketing@studyusa.com.  StudyUSA is also looking for high-quality student testimonial videos for its website.

Disclosure: Study in the USA is a client of Capstone Vietnam, of which I’m managing director.

Ten Most Popular Posts of 2012

Gold top 10 winnerIt’s that time of year again.  First, I would like to wish you, dear reader, a New Year filled with happiness, good health, peace and prosperity.  Secondly, I hope that you’ve been found something on these pages – bits and pieces of useful information, an insight, an idea – that is some benefit to you.

People visit An International Educator in Vietnam from a number of virtual locations.  Some arrive here from a search engine while others visit on a regular basis looking for up-to-date information about Vietnam and, in particular, US-Vietnam educational exchange. Still others are “regulars” (i.e., subscribers).

Interestingly, five of the top 10 posts are from 2011 and 2010.  (My biographical sketch is a permanent fixture.)  A November 2010 post about student visas and US community colleges remains in 1st place.  In 2nd place is a post that has nothing to do with Vietnam,  education or US-Vietnam educational exchange but everything to do with love:  a bilingual Valentine’s Day greeting.   (This post received 2,124 visits!  :-))   I’ve seen a steady stream of visits from people looking for information about US nationalism, hence the 8th place ranking of the post about nationalism, patriotism and global citizenship.

The posts that also made it into the top ten in 2011 are the ones about buying an accredited overseas Ph.D. (yes, most are serious) and about the AIESEC “Developing Leaders” conference, held in Hanoi in January 2011.   (Hey, AIESEC!  What’s up!)

And now, without further ado, here are the top 10 posts from 2012:

“Internationalizing the Community College Campus”

08/11/2012

Here’s an informative article by Nick Clark, Editor, World Education News & Reviews, that touches on source country trends, receiving institution trends, community colleges as an international model, internationalization challenges, and successful recruiting models.  Vietnam is, of course, an important part of this story.

Students at community colleges come from a diverse range of countries, and while the top source countries align to a degree with the broader overall tertiary enrollment picture, there are clearly countries where the U.S. community college model is better understood and appreciated than in others.

Among Chinese students, for example, community colleges tend to be a far less popular option than the traditional university route. Community college enrollments accounted for less than 6 percent of the total Chinese tertiary body in the United States in 2010/11, while as a percentage of the total international body, Chinese students in the two-year sector represented just one in 10 students – versus more than one in five of all international higher education enrollments.

Even more telling is the distribution of Indian students across academic levels. Of the 103,895 Indian students in U.S. institutions of higher education in 2010/11, just 2.6 percent, or 2,336, were studying at the community college level. And among the 28,145 Canadian students, the fourth biggest cohort of international students in the U.S., just 1,438 were attending community colleges in 2011.

On the flip side of the coin, students from countries and territories such as Vietnam, Mexico, Hong Kong, Nepal, and Indonesia enroll at the community college level at a disproportionally higher level than students from other countries. In the case of Vietnam, almost 60 percent of students in U.S. higher education were attending a community college in 2010/11. This compares to 12.4 percent at the community college level among all international students. Meanwhile, 40 percent of students from Hong Kong were studying at the two-year level in 2011, along with 31 percent of Mexicans and Indonesians, and 28 percent of Nepalese students.

Recalibrating Global Recruitment Strategies in Difficult Times!

27/04/2012

I’m pleased to be participating in a pre-conference workshop at Houston Community College the day before the NAFSA annual conference begins.

Organized by the  Center for Global Advancement of Community Colleges (CGACC) , which is dedicated to increasing global knowledge and understanding of U.S. community colleges, bridging cultures through awareness, serving as a resource, advancing institutional internationalization efforts, and partnering with national and international entities to expand and enhance educational opportunities, this interactive workshop will focus on alternative recruitment strategies for community college in “difficult times,” including leveraging 2+2, e-marketing-social media and partnerships.  Below is a description and list of objectives.  Click here to learn more about the workshop and my distinguished fellow presenters.     You can download a PDF version of the flyer here

The workshop is highly interactive with participants asked to share insights. Presenters will provide examples and experiences of their success and failures in the new environment. The presenters will make brief presentation highlighting how the paradigm shift is driving change in marketing practices in their own organizations. Each participant leaves with a greater understanding and tools that can be implemented the next day.

Workshop Objectives

  • To bring better understanding of the new lay of the land, reaching students and engaging them
  • To have an understanding of a full range of out of the box approach to recruitment methods
  • To be given some key recommendations to improve your college’s recruitment activities

Fall 2012 StudyUSA Community College Fairs

13/04/2012

Vietnam now ranks 8th among all countries sending students to the US, according to the 2011 Open Doors international academic mobility report, with nearly 15,000 students, three-quarters of whom are undergraduates.  Of that 75%, the majority begin their studies at a community college.  Vietnam ranks 3rd in international student enrollment at US community colleges.

Capstone Vietnam’s StudyUSA Community College (CC) Fairs in Vietnam cover all three regions of the country and enable community college representatives to meet with students and parents who are interested in learning about the advantages and benefits of a community college experience.  The fair series includes a country briefing and market update, consular briefings and high school visits in each city.

The 3rd annual fall community college-only fair series will take place as follows:

  • Monday, 1 October in Haiphong
  • Wednesday, 3 October in Hanoi
  • Friday, 5 October in Danang
  • Sunday, 7 October in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Stay tuned for more information and online registration on the Capstone website.

Broward College in Vietnam

11/04/2012

Broward College, based in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, is one of the larger and more internationally active community colleges in the US.  It has an enrollment of 70,000 students and ranks 40th on the Open Doors 2011 list of community colleges that host international students with 491.  Most of its international students – not included in the Open Doors stats - are enrolled in Broward programs in five (5) countries in Asia and South America.

Broward, through local partners, offers associate degree programs in Ecuador, Peru, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.  Each of these programs permits students to transfer to Broward or another foreign (e.g., US, Australia, Singapore) institution of higher education at any time.

The college awards credits and provides official transcripts for students enrolled in each of these programs.  As its website notes, Broward’s SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accreditation extends only to the Broward College academic programs at these five sites, not to the institutions themselves.

Program in Vietnam

The Vietnamese American Vocational Training College (VATC) is Broward’s international affiliate in Ho Chi Minh City, acquired by Blackhorse Asset Management.  The goal is to offer a comparable US community college experience in terms of admission procedures, facilities, academic and career advising and teaching.  As David More, Broward’s associate vice president for international education, noted, “Unlike with universities which just cooperate in international programs with international schools, Broward College Vietnam will assure students of first-class facilities and programs of a U.S. international college in order that after two years of studying in major with AA or AS degrees, students can be well-equipped to work or going for a two-year-transfer in the U.S., Australia or Singapore.”
